Though chronic disease is often thought of in terms of how it is treated medically, the reality is, we may stand to gain the most, in terms of collective health, by implementing successful public health initiatives that prevent or mitigate the effects of chronic disease. Preventable chronic diseases are, after all, preventable, when certain behavioral risk factors are successfully controlled— a task well-suited to the public health enterprise.
