NEONI's Healthcare Career Shadowing Program

Job shadowing is an opportunity for a student to learn first-hand about careers and job skills by actually taking part in a real-life workplace experience. Through NEONI's Healthcare Career Shadowing Program, Northeast Ohio high school juniors and seniors have the ability to spend a day at one of several area participating hospitals interacting with professional healthcare practitioners in the fields of:

  • nursing
  • radiology
  • laboratory technology
  • occupational therapy
  • physical therapy
  • pharmacy
  • respiratory therapy

The Center for Health Affairs and its workforce initiative, NEONI, implemented this regional approach to healthcare job shadowing in 2002 in order to increase awareness of local healthcare careers and to assist hospitals in providing this experience to the youth of our local community. The program is offered free of cost to both students and schools. Since 2002, NEONI's Healthcare Career Shadowing program has assisted more than 5,000 high school students in completing a job shadowing experience in a healthcare facility.

Students who complete a job shadowing experience benefit in many ways including:

  • Learning about job possibilities within the healthcare field.
  • Discussing real-life issues with healthcare professionals.
  • Experiencing the workplace first-hand.
  • Formulating future goals for a career in healthcare.

Students who are interested in participating in this healthcare job shadowing program should notify their school guidance counselor. School guidance counselors will provide students with the necessary instructions on how to log on and complete the quick and easy online registration process.

If you are a guidance counselor who is interested in having your high school participate in the NEONI Healthcare Career Shadowing Program, please fill out the High School Participation Form and return to Sue Zagula at sue.zagula@chanet.org.
