Passing NEONI's Student Orientation Test
All students and faculty must complete the NEONI Student Orientation prior to doing clinical rotations.

Background Check
Evidence of a background check must be provided to SWGC Education Department for all student clinical rotations. Documentation must be received no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of the clinical rotation. Access to clinical areas will be denied until notification has been received.

Class Roster
All clinical instructors need to assure the schools of nursing have submitted the rosters for their clinical groups along with the Acknowledgement of Policy forms. Submit roster and forms no later than 2 weeks before the first day of clinical rotations. Any delays in the submission of BOTH of these forms will cause delays in student orientation and obtaining electronic medical records (CarePoints) passwords for the students.

Orientation

  • SWGHC supports quality patient care and the future nursing workforce by offering student experiences consistent with education, clinical levels and course objectives. (see memo)
  • The Education Department provides a general orientation program for affiliate instructors and students. It is the affiliate instructor’s responsibility to schedule an instructor orientation date. Orientation includes basic EMR (CarePoints) instruction. 
  • It is the responsibility of ALL instructors to provide a unit orientation to their students on the first day of the clinical experience.
  • The instructor will provide the Education Department with the course syllabus, objectives, focus of the experience, the skills the students currently have, and the skill which they need to acquire.
  • Please search the database by your desired unit for availability prior to submitting a new or change placement request in StudentMAX™.

Medication Access & Administration
Diebolt access is available for instructors only. Instructors will obtain a Diebolt access badge through the SWGHC Pharmacy Department. This badge will be returned to Pharmacy at the completion of the final clinical experience for the school year.

The affiliate instructor must be present with the student administering medications at all times during the medication administration process following Medication Administration Procedure (see Medication Safety Policy and Pain Management Policy)

Blood Glucose Monitoring Skill
The instructor will be skill tested on BGM monitoring and will be responsible for skill testing the students.

Confidentiality
The affiliate faculty and all students will practice in accordance with HIPAA guidelines and regulations outlined in NEONI orientation and SWGHC student orientation.

Badge

  • The affiliate instructor will obtain a badge from Protective Services and wear the badge at all times while acting as affiliate instructor at SWGHC.
  • Students will wear their school identification badge at all times while on the clinical unit at SWGHC 

Hospital Policies

  • Patient Identification – All patients must wear an identification band that must be referenced and patient identity verified by all caregivers using first and last name and date of birth as identifiers (see Patient Identification)
  • Infection Control – SWGHC’s Infection Control Department  in collaboration with the Medical Staff and Board of Trustees  is committed to maintaining ongoing Patient and Quality Improvement mto ensure patients receive consistent high quality care. Responsibility for infection control lies with all staff, students and affiliate instructors. Infection control policy, practices/procedures will be followed consistently for all patients/patient care (see Infection Control)

Parking & Maps: 
Students may park in SWGHC surface lot parking. Campus maps are available to assist the affiliate instructor and students in navigating the campus (see Maps

Student Experiences: 
No student will provide hands-on patient care except under the supervision of the assigned facility member or appropriate SWGHC employee. Each student will provide patient care consistent with course objectives and outcomes consistent with SWGHC policy and procedure. Each student shall obtain report from the SWGHC nurse assigned to the patient at the beginning of the student’s shift. The student shall provide patient report to the SWGHC nurse assigned to the patient at the end of the student’s shift and at other requested times (see Handoff Policy). Affiliate instructor or SWGHC designated student supervisor shall be responsible for all student practice.

Release of Student
The Manager responsible for the department in which the student is placed may at any time direct the student or instructor to to cease providing services.

During the Clinical Experience

  • If an instructor is ill or out of the hospital, students may not be on the unit. Instructors should notify the nurse manager if students will not be present for the scheduled clinical experience.
  • Promptly report unusual occurrences, incidents or errors on the clinical unit to the charge nurse and/or nurse manager.

Emergency Medical Care
Emergency medical care is available via SWGHC ED for instructors and students, at their own expense, for injury occurring to them while they are participating in the scheduled clinical experience on the hospital premises. The injury should be reported to the nurse in charge and the student/instructor will be sent to the Medical Clinic or Emergency Department as appropriate.

Health Criteria
The records validating these requirements are maintained by the affiliating school and made available to Southwest General Health Center prior to the clinical experience (see Student Affiliation Policy).

Pre-placement medical requirements are monitored by the Education Department.

  • Require pre-placement medical testing and immunization records prior to the student experience
  • Current TB test is required

Requests for Clinical Units
All requests, for group clinical experience are submitted through the NEONI online clinical placement tool. The identified school coordinator requests clinical placements.

  • Go to: www.neoniplacement.org
  • You will be able to view the clinical placements that are currently scheduled.
  • Utilization of clinical areas will be determined by the director of nursing, and nurse manager of each clinical area.
  • Requests are processed and confirmed through the NEONI online clinical placement tool.
  • A maximum faculty/student ratio of 1:8, except as noted below, is permitted. The ratio is subject to the approval of the nurse manager and may be lowered.
  • Labor & Delivery, ratio 1:5.
  • One to two students may be allowed in specialty units for observational experiences.
