NEONI Serves as a Vital Resource for Information About Nursing Jobs in Northeast Ohio

The healthcare industry makes up a substantial portion of the Northeast Ohio economy, employing more than 480,000 healthcare, bioscience and support workers, including 9,000 physicians.

Opportunities for nursing jobs in Northeast Ohio are expected to increase in the future according to a recently developed Nursing Forecast Model, produced in collaboration between NEONI, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation and the M.E. & F.J. Callahan Foundation.

The need to fill upcoming vacant nursing jobs in Northeast Ohio will continue to increase as the current experienced nursing population ages and retires and the general population also ages and requires more healthcare services. To address these needs, NEONI, a collaborative of Northeast Ohio nursing leaders from both practice and academia, bring together nursing leaders, clinical agencies, educators and organizations to address and seek solutions to healthcare workforce issues in Northeast Ohio.

While becoming a nurse can provide a very fulfilling career with excellent potential for advancement, prospective candidates should educate themselves about nursing jobs in Northeast Ohio. Anyone considering becoming a nurse would be wise to gather as much information about the career as possible and take several factors into consideration before deciding on that career path.

“A nurse must enjoy working with people who often are experiencing their weakest and most vulnerable moments,” said Christine A. Wynd, dean and Strawbridge professor of nursing at the Breen School of Nursing at Ursuline College.

Nurses must be able to develop strong interpersonal relationships with patients and have an exceedingly high level of communication skills, Wynd added.  The nursing profession also requires a firm educational foundation in the sciences, including biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology.

High school students may gather information about nursing jobs in Northeast Ohio by participating in the NEONI Healthcare Career Shadowing program. Students in this program spend a day at a local hospital with a nursing professional and experience the workplace first hand.
