How does CHAMPS ODS perform state reporting?

CHAMPS ODS Certified Tumor Registrars (CTRs) collect and abstract* the required cancer data from various clinical reports and/or medical records.

The data are then compiled and submitted in a standard NAACCR** record layout to the state reporting agency. Most state reporting services are provided onsite at the facility. However, services may be performed offsite if hard copies or electronic access is available.

CHAMPS ODS is aware of and in compliance with HIPAA law for confidentiality of health information, which allows reporting of identifiable cancer data to state registries.

*Abstracting is defined as the collection and coding according to the Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS) of specific data items regarding the patient, cancer disease process, treatment and outcome status from inpatient and outpatient health records.

** NAACCR stands for the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries
