Public Health Preparedness Conference

Features Nationally Recognized Speakers

Cleveland, April 27, 2007 ¾  Emergency preparedness has become increasingly important in the wake of 9/11 and recent natural disasters, each of which exposed weaknesses and gaps in our nation’s emergency response systems. It is especially important for hundreds of professionals who will gather at Cleveland State on Friday, April 27, for the fourth annual conference on issues related to protecting the public’s health when catastrophic events occur.

Nationally recognized speakers and professionals engaged in government, public health, health care, and emergency response will meet in downtown Cleveland for a Conference entitled, “How Clean is Clean? Don’t Take it Home with You.”

One speaker, Jacqueline Moline, M.D., directs the nation’s most extensive research project on the health affects experienced by first responders and others who spent time at the site of the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks. Dr. Moline will discuss the most current information derived from her research, as well as the importance of tracking the long-term health affects of human exposure to environmental contaminants.

Other speakers will address topics ranging from the unique needs of children who must undergo decontamination to a discussion of the potential role of nanotechnology in detecting and removing contaminants

“Most organizations represented at the Conference work collaboratively throughout the year in efforts to enhance the region’s ability to respond effectively to a wide range of potential public health threats,” said a spokesperson for the Conference. “The Conference gives participants an opportunity to learn new information and identify issues that might need more direct attention in our individual and collective planning efforts.”

The Conference is sponsored by the Center for Health Affairs; Case Medical School, Northeast Ohio Regional Medical Response System; Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital; and Cleveland State University, Center for Public Health Preparedness.
